Larson\nClarkson University \nStanding in a dark country meadow\, staring up at a sky full of stars and the diaphanous glow of the Milky Way\, it is easy to feel small. Staring at pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope\, it is easy to be stunned by the effortless beauty of the Cosmos. Faced with the knowledge that our planet is only one small speck among a hundred billion galaxies and a billion-trillion stars\, it is easy to feel insignificant. \nBut we live at a unique moment in human history. We are the first humans to ever see a picture of the Earth\, hanging against the darkness of the night. We are the first humans to ever know what lies on the surface of Mars\, or behind the thick fog of Titan’s clouds. We are the first humans to ever know that we are deeply connected to the stars themselves. It is easy to forget how hard it was to win that knowledge\, and how awesome it is that we can understand — that is the hallmark of our relationship with the Cosmos. \nIn this chat\, we’ll examine some of the story of how newfound knowledge has continually forced us to abandon cherished ideas about the Universe\, leading us from a time when we believed Earth and humanity were the center of all things\, to today\, where we are one small part of the greater Cosmos. \n————————–\nBIO\n————————– \nShane Larson is a professor of Physics at Clarkson University and the co-Director of PEAK\, Clarkson’s Experiential Learning Hub. He works in the field of gravitational wave astrophysics\, specializing in studies of compact stars\, binaries\, and the galaxy with both the ground-based LIGO project\, and the forthcoming space-based observatory LISA. He is an award winning teacher\, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He is an avid amateur astronomer\, observing with two homebuilt Dobsonians\, a 12.5″ named EQUINOX and a 22″ named COSMOS MARINER. DESCRIPTION:COCC -Wille Hall- 6:30pm \nHere Comes Your Cosmic Perspective: Our New Place in the Universe\nDr. Scott Fisher\nDirector\, Pine Mountain Observatory\nUniversity of Oregon\, Department of Physics \nIn this public-level talk that contains pictures and videos from observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope and our own Pine Mountain Observatory\, Dr. Fisher will reveal the wonders of the Universe through a lecture on what he calls “The Cosmic Perspective”. The main goal of the lecture will be to connect us to the Universe we inhabit using an easy-to-grasp scale that explains the actual size of the solar system and\nMilky Way galaxy. Once we have our new perspective in mind\, Dr. Fisher will move into a discussion of one of the most exciting recent discoveries in all of astronomy – the existence of Exo-planets. Exo-planets are planets that are known to orbit stars other than the Sun\, as of August 2026 we have confirmed that over 6000 planets exist outside our Solar System. Along the way our speaker will be very open to questions from the audience and is up for a round of “stump the astronomer” with anyone that attends the event! \n\nDr. Scott Fisher is a faculty member in the University of Oregon Department of Physics where he teaches introductory-level astronomy courses and serves as the Director for Undergraduate Studies for the department. Scott is the Director of Pine Mountain\nObservatory\, which is located about 30 miles east of Bend\, OR in an area with some of the darkest skies left in the continental US. Scott previously worked at the National Science Foundation in Washington\, DC where he was responsible for selecting and funding astronomy programs across the United States. Before his time in Washington\, Scott was based in Hilo\, Hawaii where he worked as a staff scientist of the Gemini Observatory. At Gemini\, he worked as an instrument scientist and as a member of the Gemini Outreach team.
